Born out of the Cyprus swamps east of Tallahassee, Florida in 2007, Stranger Still sought out to blend their two favorite flavors of music and distill them down into a sharp yet smooth concoction with a kick one soon wouldn't forget. The rock-infused (or rock-confused) bluegrass stylings of the group have been engaging and intoxicating audiences ever since with strong five-part vocal harmonies, a thumping bass and rhythm section and some high-energy, twisting, searing lead work. With a seemingly endless supply of original material as well as traditional bluegrass, americana and other assorted covers, Stranger Still will appease the palette of just about any crowd.
Brothers Oakley (rhythm guitar) and Bree Van Oss (mandolin), Pete Knowlton (banjo, dobro), Elizabeth Fravel (upright bass) and Brian Burke (lead guitar) come from an array of musical influences and backgrounds with a variety of experience and history with roots in Appalachia, New England and North Florida. Individually, they have played a wide range of venues from small town pubs to large regional festivals to the famed Wetlands in New York City. Some have heavy touring experience, having performed alongside members of Phish, The Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Moe., String Cheese Incident, The Slip and Disco Biscuits.
Whether you hear their music tangled up in the Spanish Moss of some backwoods stage or bouncing off the walls of your local watering hole, the fumes alone from their pickin' and a grinnin' will take you to a place located somewhere between Xanadu and Shady Grove.
